In response to the continuing challenge of low mathematics performance among Filipino learners, the League of Math Wizards brought mathematics learning support closer to the community through an outreach initiative at Annafunan Elementary School last March 2024.
Dubbed as Project Mathuto, the initiative was launched with a clear mission to help young learners overcome difficulties in mathematics and build the confidence and skills they need to succeed.
The Philippines’ performance in international assessments such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has underscored the urgent need to strengthen foundational mathematics skills. Recognizing that early intervention can make a lasting difference, Project MATHtuto provided targeted learning support, personalized tutoring, and guided mathematical activities designed to address learners’ specific needs.
The four-week learning sessions provided selected pupils from the aforementioned school with personalized mathematics instruction designed to the specific learning competencies they needed to develop.
More than simply teaching mathematical concepts, the initiative sought to create a learning environment where pupils could ask questions, practice without fear of making mistakes, and gradually develop greater confidence in solving mathematical problems.
Project MATHtuto also reflects a broader commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality Education, which calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
As Project MATHtuto continues its mission, the message is clear: closing the mathematics gap begins with reaching learners where they are, helping them discover what they can do, and giving them the support they need to succeed.
