The League of Math Wizards (LMW) of Isabela State University (ISU) has returned to Annafunan Elementary School on October 16, 2026, to bring back its mathematics learning remediation initiative through Project MATHTUTO 2.0, aimed at helping Grade 3 and Grade 4 learners strengthen their mathematical skills and understanding.
The initiative seeks to provide additional learning support to pupils experiencing difficulties in mathematics through focused tutorial sessions, guided exercises, and learner-centered activities. It aims to help learners address learning gaps, develop greater confidence in solving mathematical problems, and build a stronger foundation in mathematics. Moreover, the project provides LMW members with opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge and teaching skills in an authentic educational setting while contributing to the community.
The initiative comes amid continuing concerns about mathematics achievement in the Philippines. According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the country’s results in the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) showed an improvement in mathematics performance compared with the previous assessment cycle. However, the results also revealed that only 21% of Filipino 15-year-old students reached at least Level 2 proficiency in mathematics, compared with the OECD average of 65%. These findings indicate that despite recent gains, substantial challenges remain in helping Filipino learners develop the mathematical knowledge and skills needed to apply concepts to real-world situations.
The return to Annafunan Elementary School marks not only the continuation of LMW’s commitment to community-based mathematics education but also its broader goal of helping Filipino learners achieve mathematical proficiency. In 2024, the organization visited the school to provide similar remediation services to learners experiencing difficulties in mathematics. Through MATHtuto 2.0, LMW renews its efforts to support young learners and extend its mathematics advocacy beyond the university.
The program will consist of four tutorial sessions, with completion expected in the first week of November 2026. Each session is designed to give learners opportunities to revisit essential mathematical concepts, practice problem-solving, and receive guidance tailored to their learning needs.
